Northrop Grumman HALO Module

TUCSON, Ariz., Jan. 17, 2022 – Paragon Space Development Corporation (Paragon) is pleased to report that Northrop Grumman has completed its contract with Paragon for the life support system of the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) program, valued at more than $100 million. As the first crew module of NASA’s Lunar Gateway, HALO will be launched into lunar orbit. HALO will act as a personnel housing as well as a docking station for spacecraft traveling between the Earth and the moon on a regular basis.

The HALO Environment Control and Life Support System (ECLSS), which offers a livable, safe, and comfortable environment for visiting crew members at the Lunar Gateway, is designed, built, tested, and delivered by Paragon as part of the Northrop Grumman team. By continuously regulating the air temperature, removing trace impurities such as carbon dioxide and smells, and controlling oxygen and humidity, Paragon’s ECLSS will purify and condition the atmosphere in a safe and reliable manner. The HALO ECLSS will supply the crew and Mission Control with all necessary operational data for monitoring and operation—operations that are scheduled to last more than 15 years.

“This one-of-a-kind mission objective of long-term life support 250,000 miles from Earth is challenging and exciting. Paragon appreciates that Northrop Grumman has recognized the unique skills our team has to deliver on this challenging endeavor,” said Grant Anderson, President and CEO and Co-Founder of Paragon. Barry Finger, Paragon’s Vice President of Engineering added, “HALO is vital to NASA’s and its international partners’ efforts to get back to the moon and eventually to Mars. It is part of an international commitment to deep space exploration – and we are proud to be a part of the program.”

Based on the terms of this contract for which effort started in 2020, the Paragon/Northrop Grumman team will work towards a Critical Design Review in the second quarter of 2022 with intended delivery of the HALO module to the launch site in 2024.
