Autoliv to collaborate with Polestar on groundbreaking climate-neutral car.

STOCKHOLM, Feb. 23, 2022 – Autoliv, Inc. (NYSE: ALV) and (SSE: ALIV.sdb), the global leader in automotive safety systems, today announced its intention to partner with Polestar on Polestar 0, the industry’s leading project. By 2030, the goal is to build an automobile that is totally climate-neutral.

The “Polestar 0” project brings together firms from across the automotive supply chain to use innovation and collaboration to address the climate crisis and shift perceptions about how to build automobiles in a sustainable manner. The partnership is in line with Autoliv’s goal of becoming the first automotive safety provider to achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2030 and to achieve net-zero emissions across its supply chain by 2040.

Polestar’s moonshot goal of creating a truly climate-neutral car, dubbed the Polestar 0 project was announced back in April 2021. As per a blog post from Polestar, building a car with 0 CO2e means that we must find, and eliminate, every single CO2e emission linked to our supply chain: from mining, material refining and production, to overland and sea transportation, rather than simply planting trees to try to offset carbon emissions. To make that happen, Polestar will not only insist on total transparency and unorthodox solutions throughout the supply chain but need to get down to the nitty-gritty. Polestar needs to collaborate, to an extent not seen before, and harness the power of different viewpoints, backgrounds, and areas of expertise.

That’s why Polestar is launching an open call for research and collaboration, inviting everyone with the right knowledge, skills, or insights to join us in this endeavour. The invitation goes out to researchers, universities, suppliers, governments, entrepreneurs, experts, innovators, investors, and authorities.

A designated Polestar team is now searching for collaborators who can contribute towards technical solutions to eliminate all CO2e in the entire supply chain, without resorting to offsetting. Several industry leaders have already signed letters of intent to collaborate on research, including SSABHydroZKWAutoliv, and ZF.

Autoliv and Polestar intend to research and develop technology aiming at finding climate-neutral solutions and innovations related to automotive safety such as pyrotechnics, textiles, and new generations of materials for airbags and seatbelts.

A fully sustainable society requires us to work together in unprecedented ways.

Hans Pehrson, Head of the Polestar 0 project

“We are happy and proud to join forces with Polestar. To reach our ambitious climate targets, we need to collaborate across the value chain. We are well-positioned to continue to support our partners and customers in achieving their sustainability goals,” says Mikael Bratt, President, and CEO of Autoliv.

“It was clear from the start that this is not a solo mission and we are very excited to present such a strong line-up of interested partners, all leaders within their fields, including Autoliv. We are leveraging innovation and collaboration to address the climate crisis,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.
