Canon Introduces the RF800mm F5.6 L IS USM and RF1200mm F8 L IS USM Super-Telephoto Lenses.
The Newest RF Lenses are Ideal for Outdoor Sports, Motor Sports, Wildlife Photography, Photo News Journalism, and More.
MELVILLE, N.Y., Feb. 24, 2022 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital photography solutions, is pleased to announce the arrival of two new Canon RF lenses: the RF800mm F5.6 L IS USM and the RF1200mm F8 L IS USM, the longest focal length RF lens yet. Both super-telephoto fixed focal length lenses are relatively light for their capabilities, and they share many of the same features, including Super Spectra Coating (SSC) and Air Sphere Coating (ASC) to reduce ghosting and flaring, compatibility with both the RF1.4x and RF2x extenders, and a customizable electronic focusing ring with manual focus capability during Servo AF.
Additional features shared by both lenses include:
- Two focus presets, with the ability to instantly switch between memorized focus distances
- Circular nine-bladed aperture providing photographers with exceptionally beautiful and soft blurred backgrounds and bokeh
- Renowned Canon L-Series durability and construction with dust and water resistance, plus fluorine coating on the front element for easy cleaning
Canon RF800mm F5.6L IS USM
The RF800mm F5.6 L IS USM weighs in at just 6.9 lbs and features a minimum focusing distance of 8.53ft/2.6 meters — maximum close-up magnification is a superb 0.34x, allowing wildlife image creators to fill the frame with small subjects, such as birds, at its minimum focusing distance. Optical image stabilization is up to 4.5 stops* of shake correction and includes three IS operation modes. When using the RF1.4x or RF2x extenders, users can experience enhanced effective focal lengths of 1,120mm and 1,600mm respectively.
Canon RF1200mm F8 L IS USM
The Canon RF1200mm F8 L IS USM is the company’s most powerful super-telephoto lens. It weighs 7.4 pounds, which is exceptionally light for a super-tele lens of its type and has a minimum focusing distance of 14.1 feet/4.3 meters. Optical image stabilization provides up to 4.0 stops* of shaking correction and offers three IS operation modes, identical to the RF800mm F5.6 L IS USM lens. Users can achieve increased focal lengths of 1,680mm and 2,400mm, respectively when using the RF1.4x or RF2x extenders.
Both the RF800mm F5.6L IS USM and the RF1200mm F8L IS USM are compatible with the Extender RF 1.4x and the Extender RF 2x. The focal lengths with the extenders are as follows:
Extender RF 1.4x | Extender RF 2x | |
RF800mm F5.6L IS USM | 1120mm | 1600mm |
RF1200mm F8L IS USM | 1680mm | 2400mm |
When the lenses and extenders are combined with the EOS R system’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF, AF is possible over a wide coverage area even beyond maximum aperture f/8—up to 100% coverage on the EOS R3, EOS R5, and EOS R6. With this, users can enjoy the benefits of AF, such as Animal Detection AF, in more situations than possible on a DSLR camera. The lenses also support continuous shooting of up to 30 fps (electronic shutter) when paired with a high-performance camera like the EOS R3. On RF800mm F5.6L IS USM with Extender RF 1.4x
Leveraging on the flexibility of the RF mount, the RF800mm F5.6L IS USM and the RF1200mm F8L IS USM lens configurations are optimized to achieve the signature outstanding L-lens image quality within a smaller, lighter lens body. This includes the use of fluorite, Super UD (Ultra Low Dispersion), and UD lens elements to combat the chromatic aberration that super-telephoto lenses are particularly susceptible to, achieving crisp, clear images all the way to the edges of the frame.
Enhanced Image Stabilization for Super Telephoto Shooting:
Both lenses are equipped with the in-lens Optical IS image stabilization system, which significantly corrects the camera shake that becomes particularly visible at ultra-long focal lengths. On the RF800mm F5.6L IS USM, the equivalent of up to 4.5 shutter speed stops[3] of image stabilization is achieved (Predecessor: 4 stops); on the RF1200mm F8L IS USM, the image stabilization effect is up to 4 shutter speed stops equivalent 3 (Predecessor: no IS).
Portability:
Professional super-telephoto lenses are traditionally associated with bulky heft. The unprecedented portability achieved by the RF800mm F5.6L IS USM and the RF1200mm F8L IS USM will make them more appealing to new markets and new applications, especially when combined with the ever-increasing capabilities of the EOS R mirrorless camera system.
Pricing and Availability
The Canon RF800mm F5.6 L IS USM and Canon RF1200mm F8 L IS USM are both scheduled to be available in late May 2022 for an estimated retail price of $16,999.00 and $19,999.00, respectively**. For more information please visit usa.canon.com.
