MotorTrend magazine announced on Nov 15, 2021, that the Lucid Air has been named the 2022 MotorTrend Car of the Year, marking the first time that a new automobile brand’s debut car has received the “Golden Calipers.”
The Car of the Year award from MotorTrend is regarded as one of the most coveted in the industry. With the most advanced electric powertrain available today—technology that was entirely created, developed, and manufactured in-house—Lucid Air has established itself as the new EV benchmark.
“Earning this coveted distinction for Lucid Air, our very first car, is a resounding endorsement of our ability to deliver the most advanced electric vehicles in the world,” said Peter Rawlinson, CEO/CTO, Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID). “Our objective of achieving range through efficiency and technical innovation is crystallized in Lucid Air, and we’re elated that this effort has been recognized by MotorTrend against such formidable competition from well-established automakers.”
The assessors for the MotorTrend Car of the Year award considered six essential criteria, with Lucid Air succeeding in each: efficiency, value, design advancement, engineering excellence, safety, and performance of the intended function. The Lucid Air was pitted against 24 other high-profile automobiles, winning out over finalists such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Mercedes-Benz EQS, Porsche Taycan, Honda Civic, and many others.
“With the longest driving range of any electric vehicle on the market, an EPA estimated 520 miles, and over 1,100 horsepower available, the Lucid Air is a technological tour de force,” said MotorTrend Group Head of Editorial, Ed Loh. “The sleek futuristic Lucid Air sedan looks like nothing else on the road, while its gorgeous, smartly-packaged interior sets the standard for the next generation of luxury cars. Against our award’s criteria, there could be no doubt—the Lucid Air is MotorTrend’s 2022 Car of the Year.”
Lucid has begun delivering Lucid Air to customers, an electric vehicle with a unique approach to automotive layout and technical packaging that takes advantage of Lucid’s in-house built EV powertrain and battery pack’s downsizing. As a result, the internal cabin is spacious and sumptuous, with a gorgeous, streamlined exterior design and a small footprint.
The Lucid Air model lineup, which includes the Lucid Air Dream Edition Range, the longest-range electric car ever recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), exemplifies efficiency optimization. Lucid has claimed that when equipped with 19″ wheels and a 118kWh battery pack, it achieves 4.4 miles per kWh, which is only outdone by another Lucid Air model, the Grand Touring, which has a 112kWh battery pack and achieves 4.6 miles per kWh.
The Dream Edition Performance model has 1,111 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 2.42 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 9.67 seconds (with the 21″ wheels and tire package)—while still having an EPA-estimated range of 471 miles (with the 19″ wheel and tire package) according to Lucid’s testing.
