PARAMUS — January 6, 2021 – Sony introduces two new Crystal LED displays. Sony unveiled premium direct-view LED displays, the modular Crystal LED C series (ZRD-C12A/C15A) with high contrast, and B-series (ZRD-B12A/B15A) with high brightness.

Crystal LED displays are used in supersize display applications or screens from boardrooms, theme parks, museums, and retail showrooms to corporate lobbies, design studios, and scientific research facilities. It is a screen manufacturing technique invented by Sony and first revealed in CES 2012. The underlying technology for these displays is micro-LED.

We saw Samsung introduce The Wall in 2019 with the world’s largest microled display. Microled technology is said to be difficult to mass-produce for reasonable prices, Sony and Samsung being the major players in this technology.

Sony’s displays are available in two-pixel pitch sizes (P1.26mm and P1.58mm) to suit different installation needs. Sony says these displays combine impressive image quality, flexibility, and scalability in installation with a lower total cost of ownership. Sony’s ZRD-2 Crystal LED display features an array of ultrafine LED elements, each one half the thickness of a human hair. Each micro LED’s powerful light output contributes to bright, brilliantly immersive super-size images with spectacular contrast and wide color.

Both displays come with “X1 for Crystal LED”, a high-performance image quality processor. It has LED control technology developed by Sony for their Crystal LED’s and signal processing technology present in Sony Bravia TVs. The image accuracy is inspired by Sony’s industry-leading master monitor technology providing highly realistic large-scale imagery that maintains image integrity close-up and at a distance.

The displays upscale the image maintaining the high resolution, without motion blur, wide viewing angle, and wide color gamut, as well as various input signals, including HDR, HFR (120fps), and 3D.

“Sony has been creating unforgettable images and engaging experiences that empower and stimulate creators’ curiosity for over 60 years,” said Theresa Alesso, Pro Division President, Sony Electronics. “As we continually strive to get closer to our customers and solve their challenges, we’ve implemented the features and benefits that they value most in a direct view microLED display. The ease of installation, accessibility, flexibility, and a lower total cost of ownership can further expand spatial expression – all with the outstanding picture quality proven by the original Crystal LED.”

The Crystal LED C-series provides high contrast of 1,000,000:1. The display’s flexible installation is modular, seamless, and bezel-free which be scalable to different size ranges, layouts, and resolutions.

The Crystal LED B series are specifically made for high bright environments. It provides a high brightness of 1,800 cd/m2. The B series has a matte finish with an anti-reflection coating for film & TV production applications such as studio backdrops. B-series was developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment to reflect the creator’s needs.

Both displays have front access and lower power consumption for reduced cost of ownership. Also, these displays are fanless for quiet operation and have a 100-240 V AC power supply. As per Sony, both displays will be available in the summer of 2021.
