AWS to offer macOS instances with Mac mini hardware.

Amazon’s AWS will offer macOS instances with Mac mini hardware from today in the US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), Europe (Ireland) and Asia Pacific (Singapore) regions.

Amazon is already working on Apple M1 chip instances on Amazon EC2 and is planned for 2021.

Until now, mac instances are being provided by MacStadium, MacinCloud etc. Developers will now have a big cloud provider like AWS to run macOS and related Apple platforms.

Developers will now be able to run macOS on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).

Amazon EC2:

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a web service that provides secure, resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It is designed to make web-scale cloud computing easier for developers. Amazon EC2’s simple web service interface allows you to obtain and configure capacity with minimal friction. It provides users with complete control of your computing resources and lets you run on Amazon’s proven computing environment.

Mac instances will run macOS 10.14 (Mojave) and 10.5 (Catalina) and can be accessed via command line (SSH) or remote desktop (VNC). Mac instances will help developers to build, test, package, and sign Xcode applications for Apple platform. It will include macOS, IOS, IPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, and Safari. 

As per AWS blog post, the instances feature an 8th generation, 6-core Intel Core i7 (Coffee Lake) processor running at 3.2 GHz, with Turbo Boost up to 4.6 GHz. There’s 32 GiB of memory and access to other AWS services including Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS)Amazon Elastic File System (EFS)Amazon FSx for Windows File ServerAmazon Simple Storage Service (S3)AWS Systems Manager.

Mac instances can be run On-Demand and can also be purchased by AWS Savings Plan.
