EVOC Sports, the world’s leading manufacturer of back protector backpacks, is presenting the world’s first backpack with integrated airbag technology, aiming to lower the risk of injury for commuters. The new EVOC COMMUTING Capsule Collection, the first specialized EVOC range focused on the future-oriented segment of bicycle commuting in urban settings, is led by the COMMUTE A.I.R. PRO 18. The products in this category include novel approaches to bike safety in traffic as well as well-thought-out, modern transportation solutions.

  • First bike backpack with airbag and back protector
  • New EVOC-COMMUTING range from 2023
  • Concept presentation at the iAA Mobility (07.-12.09.21) in Munich

Mobility is rapidly changing, particularly in metropolitan settings. Congestion of city motor vehicle infrastructure, rising environmental consciousness, and a massive trend toward a healthy lifestyle are all driving forces behind this transformation. One of the biggest barriers to bicycle traffic is the fear of accidents and the resulting injuries, which is fueled by poor bicycle infrastructure. This is what prompted EVOC to develop the COMMUTING series of products in 2023 to make bike commuting safer and more comfortable.

World’s first backpack with integrated airbag technology

In the urban bike jungle, safety comes first with the COMMUTE A.I.R. PRO 18 backpack, which combines the innovatively integrated airbag technology with the integrated LITESHIELD-PLUS back protector. This gives the best possible protection for the neck, shoulders, collarbones, and chest. The airbag system was created in partnership with Minerva-AS GmbH for use in bike bags for commuting to work, school, or recreational activities.

A sensor-controlled, 18-liter inflatable airbag protector is at the heart of the device. It works by opening and closing an electric, magnetic buckle on the chest strap to activate and deactivate it. Up to 1,100 times per second, the USB-charged sensory device analyses the location of the backpack. The airbag inflates in 0.2 seconds and unfolds its protective effect whenever the defined deployment requirements are satisfied, such as in a crash. This minimizes the cyclist’s impact forces and braking acceleration by up to 80% (HIC – head injury criterion).
